The football world is abuzz following the suspension of Premier League referee David Coote after a leaked video surfaced, causing significant controversy. This incident has drawn widespread criticism, with Chelsea manager Enzo Maresca emerging as the first Premier League boss to publicly address the matter.

Maresca, ahead of Chelsea’s clash with Leicester, expressed his disapproval of the comments attributed to Coote. He firmly stated that such behavior, regardless of one's role, is unacceptable. "It doesn’t matter that he is a referee," said Maresca. "If I, as a manager, say the same, it is wrong. If you, as a journalist, say the same, it is wrong. Any human being saying these kinds of things—it is not good."
The scandal doesn’t end with verbal misconduct. Additional allegations against Coote have come to light, including a second video purportedly showing him snorting a white powder in a hotel room during Euro 2024. Furthermore, reports claim Coote attempted to organize a “drugs party” during his official duties as a referee, raising serious concerns about his conduct and professionalism. These allegations are currently under investigation by both the Professional Game Match Officials Limited (PGMOL) and UEFA, with Coote suspended from domestic and international duties.
The controversy has also reignited discussions about Coote’s history of disputes with Klopp, including incidents where Liverpool felt aggrieved by refereeing decisions. One notable clash occurred during a 2020 match against Burnley, where Klopp and Liverpool players criticized Coote for his decisions, and the referee allegedly referred to left-back Andy Robertson as a "Scottish p****."
The leaked videos and messages have only exacerbated scrutiny, with the revelations undermining trust in officiating standards at the highest levels of football. While the investigation continues, PGMOL has assured that Coote’s welfare remains a priority, emphasizing the availability of support networks for him.
This saga has put refereeing in the spotlight, with many calling for greater accountability and professional conduct among officials. Maresca’s firm stance reflects the growing sentiment across the footballing community: respect and integrity must be upheld by everyone involved in the game.
