Their story began at a reception hosted by Neil Bogart, the head of Cher's record label, for former President Gerald Ford. When introduced to Simmons, Cher initially mistook him for the British actress Jean Simmons. Despite the mix-up, she was charmed by his personality and was “impressed” by the end of the evening. The real twist came soon after: Simmons declared his love for Cher after just one date, a bold move considering they hadn’t even shared a kiss.

Cher describes the moment vividly in her memoir. Simmons, who was traveling in Japan at the time, spent hours on the phone with her, racking up a $2,800 bill before blurting out, “I love you.” It was unexpected, yet it marked the beginning of a relationship Cher would later describe as one of the best she’d ever had.

Their bond was strong but not without its complexities. Both were unapologetically independent, and their relationship wasn't entirely monogamous. Cher candidly admitted to seeing other men “for companionship” while making it clear that Simmons was the one she truly cared about. Simmons, for his part, called Cher his "first love," praising her as an “untainted soul.”

Despite their deep connection, the relationship ultimately ended, with Simmons moving on to Diana Ross. Reflecting on their time together, Cher’s memoir paints a picture of love that defied traditional norms and left both parties with fond memories.

Cher’s candidness in recounting this chapter of her life offers fans a rare glimpse into the vulnerability and boldness that have defined her as both a person and an artist.
