Cruise Ships to Revisit Robe, Boosting Tourism
Cruise ships are set to return to the scenic waters of Robe, South Australia, marking an exciting revival for the region’s tourism. This announcement comes after a notable pause in visits, bringing renewed energy and economic promise to the picturesque Limestone Coast. Tourism Minister Zoe Bettison revealed in the House of Assembly that Guichen Bay will welcome cruise liners once again in 2025, 2026, and 2027. The return of these vessels follows the successful visit of the "Coral Adventurer" in 2022, which captivated locals and visitors alike.

The 2022 arrival of the "Coral Adventurer" was a landmark moment for Robe. The small cruise ship, on a circumnavigation of Australia, anchored in Guichen Bay, and approximately 100 passengers disembarked via the ship’s longboats at Lake Butler Marina. This event was the first in recent memory where a cruise liner successfully landed its passengers in Robe. However, the region’s relationship with cruise tourism hasn’t always been smooth sailing. In 2016, adverse weather conditions thwarted plans for hundreds of passengers aboard the P&O cruise ship "Pacific Jewel" to explore the region. This missed opportunity highlighted the challenges of accommodating large-scale tourism in dynamic marine conditions.
The reintroduction of cruise ships to Robe’s itinerary signifies a milestone in the town’s efforts to attract visitors. These visits not only promise to bolster the local economy but also provide a chance for passengers to experience the unique charm of the Limestone Coast. From the historic landmarks of Robe to the vineyards of Coonawarra and the pristine beaches of Beachport, the region offers a wealth of attractions.
The return of cruise liners is an opportunity to showcase the area's natural beauty and cultural richness, reinforcing Robe’s status as a sought-after coastal destination. With proper planning and collaboration between local authorities and tourism operators, this initiative can foster a thriving connection between the cruise industry and the Limestone Coast community.
