At least 15 people in Minnesota have fallen ill due to E. coli contamination linked to ground beef products, prompting a major recall. Federal health officials revealed that this outbreak is tied to a recall of more than 167,000 pounds of ground beef by Detroit-based Wolverine Packing Co. After state agriculture officials in Minnesota reported several cases of E. coli poisoning, the company initiated the recall. One of the samples of the ground beef tested positive for E. coli O157:H7, a strain known to cause serious and sometimes life-threatening infections.

The illnesses occurred between November 2 and November 10, 2024, and currently, all reported cases are confined to Minnesota. The investigation into the source of contamination is still ongoing. E. coli is a bacterium found naturally in the environment, in both humans and animals, and in water and food sources. While most types of E. coli are harmless, the O157:H7 strain can be particularly dangerous. It can cause symptoms such as severe stomach cramps, diarrhea, vomiting, and fever, usually within a day or two of consuming contaminated food.
