First New Trains for Sengkang-Punggol LRT Arrive in Singapore

Exciting news for commuters in Sengkang and Punggol as the first two new trains for the Sengkang-Punggol LRT have arrived in Singapore! Delivered on November 23, these state-of-the-art, two-carriage trains are part of a broader plan to enhance the LRT network’s efficiency and capacity. The Land Transport Authority (LTA) announced that these trains will undergo thorough testing at the Sengkang LRT depot and are slated to begin passenger service by the third quarter of 2025.

This is just the start of a larger initiative to bring in a total of 25 new two-car trains, with deliveries set to continue through to 2027. Manufactured by Japan’s Mitsubishi Heavy Industries, these new trains promise an upgraded commuter experience, offering enhanced comfort and efficiency. The new fleet will replace the existing single-car trains, marking a significant upgrade in capacity and functionality. By the time all trains are operational, the fleet will consist entirely of two-car trains—33 in total. This move aims to meet the increasing ridership demands in the rapidly growing Sengkang and Punggol regions.

Residents have shared mixed feelings about the current trains. While many, like Chantelle Lee from Sengkang, find the existing fleet reliable, others are looking forward to the new trains addressing specific concerns. Issues like bumpy rides, limited space during peak hours, and occasional poor ventilation have been highlighted. Enhancements such as better ventilation, digital displays for real-time information, and clearer audio-visual announcements are anticipated features that could make a big difference.

The improvements come amidst increasing focus on public transport reliability. While the current LRT network maintains decent performance metrics, there is room for growth to meet commuter expectations. For instance, the network clocked 612,000 car-km between delays exceeding five minutes over the past year, showing a slight dip from previous figures.

These new trains represent not just a step forward in transport technology but also a commitment to making daily commutes smoother and more enjoyable for residents. As we look forward to their official launch in 2025, it’s clear that Singapore is continuing its push toward a more efficient and user-friendly public transport system.
