Fog Disrupts Travel at Belfast City Airport, Leaving Passengers Stranded
Today, Belfast City Airport faced significant travel disruptions as dense fog descended upon the region, prompting the cancellation of most scheduled flights. The adverse weather conditions affected both arrivals and departures, leaving travelers frustrated and uncertain about their plans.
Out of 18 scheduled inbound flights, 13 were canceled. Some were diverted to other airports, including Belfast International Airport and London Heathrow, as visibility plummeted to less than 100 meters in some areas. Of the 10 departures planned for the evening, nine were canceled, further complicating the situation for passengers. The Met Office had issued a yellow weather warning for fog across Northern Ireland, advising extreme caution for travelers, both on the roads and in the air.

The freezing fog wasn’t just a hazard for air travel—it also wreaked havoc on ground transportation. Motorists were warned about treacherous driving conditions caused by icy patches and reduced visibility. Authorities advised drivers to familiarize themselves with fog lights, maintain greater distances between vehicles, and plan for extended travel times. Public transport and ferry services also reported potential delays.
The conditions have had a ripple effect across Northern Ireland. Supporters of Larne FC, en route to a match in Slovenia, found themselves stranded, unable to reach their destination. Meanwhile, at Belfast City Airport, live tracking data showed planes from cities like Manchester, Birmingham, and London circling the area, waiting for an opportunity to land.
The Met Office has indicated that the freezing fog may persist until early Thursday morning, with temperatures hovering below freezing. This creates a dual challenge of frost and fog, which are slow to dissipate in the absence of wind. Flights at Belfast International Airport, however, continued to operate, albeit with caution.
Passengers and commuters are encouraged to stay informed about the evolving situation by checking weather updates and transport advisories. For air travelers, confirming flight statuses directly with airlines remains crucial. As the fog lingers, it serves as a reminder of how quickly nature can disrupt modern travel and the importance of flexibility in such conditions.
