Haroun Bouazzi Apologizes Amid Controversy Over Racism Allegations
Haroun Bouazzi, a Québec Solidaire Member of the National Assembly (MNA) for Maurice-Richard, has found himself at the center of a political storm. Following controversial remarks alleging systemic racism within the National Assembly, Bouazzi issued a public apology on social media to ministers Christian Dubé and Lionel Carmant, admitting to what he called a "misstep." His comments had sparked widespread criticism, both within his party and across political lines, forcing him to clarify his stance and reaffirm his commitment to anti-racism without targeting individuals.
The controversy began when Bouazzi, during a public discussion and subsequent interview, claimed to observe daily instances of systemic exclusion within the legislature, which he argued constructed certain communities—such as Maghrebis, Muslims, Blacks, and Indigenous peoples—as dangerous or inferior. Specific references to Dubé and Carmant further inflamed tensions, leading to accusations of falsehood and divisiveness. Both ministers publicly rejected the allegations, calling them baseless and damaging to the integrity of the Assembly.

Bouazzi’s remarks drew swift backlash from all major parties, including members of his own Québec Solidaire caucus. Prominent figures like Christine Labrie openly expressed discomfort, emphasizing the need for clarity and unity within the party. The leader of Québec Solidaire, Gabriel Nadeau-Dubois, also addressed the issue, underscoring the party’s position that the National Assembly and its members are not racist. A motion reaffirming this stance was adopted within the party but left Bouazzi’s future uncertain as discussions about his role continued.
The broader political landscape also reacted strongly. Motions were introduced by the governing Coalition Avenir Québec (CAQ) and opposition parties demanding Bouazzi formally retract his statements and apologize to the Assembly. The incident highlighted broader debates around the responsibilities of elected officials to balance freedom of speech with respect for institutional integrity.
In his apology, Bouazzi acknowledged the impact of his words, noting that his intention was never to target individuals but to shed light on systemic issues. He reiterated his commitment to fighting racism and thanked his colleagues for their solidarity amid the backlash.
While his apology may have quelled immediate tensions, the controversy has left lingering questions about party unity and the boundaries of political discourse. For Québec Solidaire, navigating this sensitive issue will be crucial as it seeks to reaffirm its values while maintaining cohesion within its ranks.
