Herbert Leads Australian Open with Impressive Round 1 Performance
The ISPS HANDA Australian Open has kicked off with a bang, and it's Lucas Herbert who has emerged as the man to beat after an extraordinary opening round. On November 28th, 2024, at Victoria Golf Club, Herbert fired a flawless 8-under 63, marking a scintillating start to the prestigious tournament. This impressive performance not only propelled him to the top of the leaderboard but also gave him a slender one-shot advantage over two golfers chasing him closely: Japanese amateur Rintaro Nakano and American Ryggs Johnston, who were both playing at Kingston Heath.
Despite the superb score, Herbert was quick to downplay his round, expressing that he felt there were still opportunities left out on the course. "I feel like that with every round of golf, to be fair," he said with a smile. He acknowledged that while his game had been solid, he hadn’t holed as many putts as he might have liked and credited his positioning and a few lucky breaks. "If that's the worst round of the week, I'd be pretty happy," Herbert added, showing confidence in his performance.

Herbert, a local from Victoria, made his mark early on the back nine of the famous Victoria layout. After three steady pars, he ignited his round with birdies on holes 13 and 15, taking full advantage of the par-4s. His momentum continued as he wrapped up the front nine with consecutive birdies at the 17th and 18th, both par-5s, moving to 4-under. The second half of his round saw more brilliance, including another birdie at the first, followed by a stunning eagle on the par-5 ninth to cap off an almost perfect day.
Despite holding the lead, Herbert was fully aware of the competition, especially with 2022 Open champion Cameron Smith not far behind. Smith, who has been in great form recently, is expected to mount a strong challenge for the Stonehaven Cup this week. Herbert is familiar with the pressure Smith brings, having recently battled him at the NSW Open. Smith had a brilliant start but faltered later in the round, finishing eight shots behind Herbert.
A surprise performance came from the 21-year-old Nakano, who impressed with his first-round play. After winning the 2023 Japanese Amateur Championship, Nakano showed he’s a force to be reckoned with. Meanwhile, last year’s champion, Joaquin Niemann, made a statement of his own with a 66 at Victoria, placing him in contention as the tournament unfolds.
As the Australian Open continues, all eyes are on Herbert, who has set the bar high early in the competition. With strong challengers like Smith, Niemann, and a host of talented players in pursuit, it's shaping up to be an exciting week at both Kingston Heath and Victoria Golf Club. The question remains: Can Herbert hold his nerve, or will someone else rise to the occasion in the coming days?
