Honoring Sacrifice: Sikh Remembrance Day in Kitchener
Every year, as November rolls around, we are reminded of the profound sacrifices made by countless individuals during times of war. On the 17th Sikh Remembrance Day, held at Mount Hope Cemetery in Kitchener, Ontario, this sentiment was powerfully embodied as we gathered to honor the memory of Private Buckam Singh, a distinguished hero from the First World War. This annual ceremony has become a cherished tradition since its inception in 2008, marking a vital moment of remembrance for both the Sikh community and all Canadians.
Private Buckam Singh holds a special place in Canadian history, being one of the first Sikh soldiers permitted to serve in the Canadian army during the First World War. His grave, located in Mount Hope Cemetery, is notably the only recognized burial site of a Sikh soldier in Canada, a testament to the sacrifices made by individuals of diverse backgrounds in service to our nation. The chief organizer of Sikh Remembrance Day, Sandeep Singh Brar, shared his personal journey of discovery that led to this event. After acquiring Singh's military medal, Brar was astonished to learn about the contributions of Sikh soldiers to Canada’s war efforts. This revelation ignited a two-year research endeavor, which culminated in bringing awareness to Singh’s legacy and the broader story of Sikh participation in Canadian military history.
