Israeli Cabinet to Decide on Crucial Lebanon Ceasefire Deal

Israel and Lebanon are on the brink of a pivotal ceasefire agreement, as the Israeli cabinet prepares to vote on a proposed deal. Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has given his preliminary approval, signaling a significant step toward ending hostilities with Hezbollah. The proposal, facilitated by U.S. mediation, aims for a 60-day cessation of hostilities that could serve as a foundation for lasting peace. The vote is expected to pass, though opinions on the deal remain sharply divided.

The negotiations come amid escalating tensions, with both sides trading fire along the border. Over the past months, the conflict has displaced residents on both sides, deepening the urgency for a resolution. Despite the cautious optimism surrounding the ceasefire talks, a single misstep could derail progress. A Lebanese official suggested an announcement could come within 24 hours, underscoring the momentum of discussions.

However, not everyone is on board. Israel’s far-right National Security Minister, Itamar Ben Gvir, has strongly opposed the deal, calling it a "historic missed opportunity" to eliminate Hezbollah as a threat. Meanwhile, Benny Gantz, a former war cabinet member, has urged Netanyahu to make the deal’s details public, reflecting widespread concern among Israelis, particularly those living near the northern border. Many fear the agreement could mirror past arrangements that failed to prevent renewed conflict.

U.S. envoy Amos Hochstein has been instrumental in mediating between the parties. Following constructive discussions in both Lebanon and Israel, he expressed optimism, stating, “We have a real opportunity to bring conflict to an end.” Nevertheless, U.S. officials have tempered expectations, emphasizing that the process remains fragile until finalized. The Biden administration has lauded the progress, with a White House spokesperson calling the trajectory “very positive.”

The vote in Israel’s cabinet will be a critical moment, potentially marking a turning point in a conflict that has spanned decades. While hope remains, the region’s fraught history serves as a stark reminder of the challenges in achieving lasting peace.
