James Johnson's Resilience in the Wilderness: How a Lost Hunter Survived the Night
James Johnson, an experienced and dedicated hunter from Encampment, Wyoming, found himself in a life-threatening situation last week, when he became lost during an elk hunting trip in the Medicine Bow National Forest. What could have been a tragic story turned into a remarkable tale of survival, thanks to his resourcefulness, calm demeanor, and preparedness.
Johnson had been hunting on October 30, 2024, in the rugged, foot-travel-only terrain of the Medicine Bow area. With daylight fading and a storm approaching, he mistakenly climbed a wrong ridge, leaving him disoriented in the unfamiliar wilderness. Instead of panicking, Johnson made a crucial decision: he would use the remaining daylight to secure shelter and start a fire to ensure his survival overnight.
As the temperatures dropped, snow began to fall, and winds picked up, Johnson quickly gathered limbs to construct a makeshift shelter. Using a flint, he ignited some nylon game bags—an improvised fire starter he had on hand—and successfully created a small fire that helped him dry damp wood for warmth. Despite the harsh conditions, Johnson remained calm and focused, knowing that the fire would be crucial to his survival.
As night fell, snow accumulated and the winds intensified, but Johnson stayed awake, tending to the fire, and keeping himself mobile to avoid the cold. He kept his spirits high, knowing that the sunrise would bring hope. The next morning, he packed up his shelter, extinguished the fire, and began searching for a way out. His goal was to find a high ridge that would give him a vantage point to locate a road, but the terrain was confusing and treacherous. Johnson kept moving, hoping to find some sign of civilization.

After hours of navigating through the wilderness, he eventually found a stream and followed it downstream, abandoning any thought of returning to his truck. As he continued his journey, he spotted fresh mountain lion tracks, but despite the potential danger from wildlife, he was unperturbed, armed with his rifle and sidearm. Johnson's primary concern was making it to safety, and after a lengthy trek, he found himself near the Encampment River, where a trail led him to Commissary Park near the Colorado border.
It was at this point, after an exhausting 20-mile journey, that a helicopter from Classic Air Search and Rescue spotted him. By 3:15 p.m. on October 31, Johnson was found, safe and in good health, despite the harsh conditions he had endured. The search team had been actively looking for him since the previous night, when his family and local authorities became worried after he failed to return.
Johnson's wife, family, and friends were overjoyed when they received the news that he had been found. He expressed deep gratitude for the Carbon County Sheriff’s Office and Search and Rescue teams, who had been tirelessly searching for him. Johnson emphasized the importance of supporting these vital local services, which played an essential role in his safe return.
The rescue operation, which involved volunteers, the sheriff’s office, and the helicopter crew, was a successful collaboration. Carbon County Sheriff Alex Bakken praised Johnson’s resilience and credited the search teams for their dedication. Despite being just five miles away from his truck as the crow flies, Johnson’s journey through the rugged terrain had taken him much farther, with elevation gains and winding paths that complicated his situation.
Johnson, who has been described as a seasoned and knowledgeable hunter, knew the risks of the wilderness, but his calmness, preparedness, and positive mindset ultimately helped him navigate the challenges. Reflecting on his experience, he credited his survival to faith in the possibility of finding a way out, as well as the unwavering support from his family and the search teams.
This harrowing adventure serves as a reminder of the unpredictable dangers in the wilderness and the importance of staying calm, being prepared, and trusting in the support of local rescue teams. James Johnson’s story is one of resilience, resourcefulness, and the power of never giving up, no matter the odds.
