J.K. Dobbins' Injury Casts Doubt on Chargers' Playoff Hopes After MNF Exit
On Monday night, Los Angeles Chargers running back J.K. Dobbins faced an unfortunate setback during his team's Week 12 matchup against the Baltimore Ravens, a game that carried extra meaning for Dobbins as he was facing his former team. The Chargers were already struggling on the scoreboard when Dobbins was forced to leave the field in the second half due to a knee injury. By the end of the game, with the Chargers falling 30-23, Dobbins was officially ruled out and didn’t return to action.

Dobbins had been playing relatively well up until that point, totaling 40 yards on 6 carries and contributing 19 yards through the air with 3 receptions. Despite the game’s outcome, he was on track to deliver one of his better performances of the season. His 6.7 yards per carry average hinted at his growing impact in the Chargers' offense, which has relied on his ability to break big runs and contribute in the passing game. However, a knee injury in the first half quickly derailed his night. He was deemed questionable to return, and later, reports indicated that he left the sideline for the locker room after halftime, sporting a knee brace.
For Dobbins, the injury is particularly concerning due to his history with serious injuries. The 2020 second-round pick has battled through multiple setbacks, including a torn ACL that caused him to miss the entire 2021 season, a separate knee injury in 2022, and a torn Achilles that sidelined him in 2023. These ongoing issues have limited his playing time, with Dobbins appearing in only 24 games over his first four seasons, making each injury even more critical. After joining the Chargers this season, Dobbins had begun to show signs of a resurgence, already posting 766 rushing yards and 8 touchdowns—very close to his career highs. His early success in Los Angeles had made fans optimistic about his potential to set a new career benchmark, but now his future is uncertain again.
The Chargers are left with more questions than answers. While veteran Gus Edwards is listed as the backup running back behind Dobbins, it’s unclear whether the team will lean on him to shoulder a larger workload, or if third-string back Hassan Haskins or even rookie Kimani Vidal will be called upon in the coming weeks. If Dobbins’ knee injury proves to be severe, the Chargers may be forced to adjust their offensive game plan and depth chart. In the meantime, fans will anxiously await more updates from the team as they assess the severity of Dobbins’ injury, hoping for the best while bracing for potential setbacks to their playoff hopes.
