Kapanen Joins Oilers’ Second Line for Exciting Debut vs. Wild

After being claimed off waivers from the St. Louis Blues earlier this week, forward Kasperi Kapanen is set to make his Edmonton Oilers debut tonight against the Minnesota Wild. The Finnish forward, known for his speed and energy, will slot into the second line alongside Ryan Nugent-Hopkins and Jeff Skinner. Kapanen’s arrival comes at a crucial moment for the Oilers, as they look to navigate the temporary absences of Zach Hyman and Viktor Arvidsson.

“It’s been a whirlwind couple of days, but I’m thrilled to be here and to jump into a game right away,” Kapanen shared ahead of the match. With one goal in 10 appearances for the Blues this season and a track record of 209 points in 470 NHL games, the former first-round pick is eager to make an impact. “My skating is probably my biggest strength, so I’ll be looking to use that to bring energy and help the team win,” he added.

The Oilers are also making lineup adjustments to compensate for injuries. Hyman is sidelined for four to seven days following a hit in Tuesday’s game against Ottawa, while Arvidsson remains on injured reserve with an uncertain timeline for return. Coach Chris Knoblauch emphasized the need for patience with Arvidsson’s recovery, highlighting the importance of ensuring a full return to form.

Tonight’s matchup also sees the return of defenseman Josh Brown, who was briefly reassigned to the AHL before being recalled. Brown’s presence adds depth to the blueline, especially with Darnell Nurse still recovering from an upper-body injury. Nurse practiced as a seventh defenseman this morning and could return as soon as Saturday against the New York Rangers.

Goaltender Stuart Skinner will make his second consecutive start, following a strong 27-save performance earlier this week. The Oilers hope his consistency will provide a solid foundation as they face a Minnesota team eager to exploit Edmonton’s temporary roster challenges.

As Kapanen takes the ice in his debut, fans can expect a dynamic addition to the Oilers' lineup. His speed, size, and determination could provide the spark Edmonton needs to secure a critical win in front of their home crowd at Rogers Place.
