Las Palmas Shocks Barcelona 2-1 in Historic Upset on 125th Anniversary
Barcelona's 125th-anniversary celebrations took an unexpected turn as they suffered a surprising 2-1 defeat at home against Las Palmas. The Spanish La Liga leaders, who haven’t lost at home to this side since 1971, were left stunned in a performance that marked their third consecutive league match without a win. The upset was a major blow for Barcelona fans and a triumph for Las Palmas, who secured an invaluable three points in their battle against relegation.
The match, held at the Estadi OlÃmpic LluÃs Companys, saw a spirited Las Palmas capitalize on limited opportunities. Former Barcelona striker Sandro RamÃrez opened the scoring early in the second half, curling a low shot beyond Iñaki Peña. His strike silenced the crowd of 43,921, who were there to honor a historic milestone for their beloved club. Barcelona responded shortly after, with captain Raphinha smashing a precise shot into the bottom corner, bringing the home crowd back to life.

However, Las Palmas’ Fabio Silva, on loan from Wolves, had other plans. In the 67th minute, Silva latched onto a pinpoint through ball from Javi Muñoz and calmly slotted it past Peña. His goal marked his fifth of the season and handed the visitors their first victory at Barcelona in over five decades. Las Palmas held their nerve through relentless pressure from Barcelona, aided by goalkeeper Jasper Cillessen’s heroics, including a stunning save to deny a Raphinha free-kick.
Despite having 26 shots and dominating possession, Barcelona failed to find the finishing touch. They were left frustrated by disallowed goals, missed chances from Ferran Torres and Lamine Yamal, and resolute defending by Las Palmas. The loss leaves Barcelona still at the top of La Liga but only four points ahead of Real Madrid, who have two games in hand.
For Las Palmas, the win is a historic moment, moving them temporarily up to 14th and five points clear of the relegation zone. For Barcelona, it’s a wake-up call during what should have been a celebratory weekend. The defeat underscores the unpredictable nature of football, where even the strongest teams can falter in the face of determination and grit.
