Lifelong Iowa Friends Gather in LA for Hawkeyes Game at the Rose Bowl
In an exciting and heartwarming reunion, a group of lifelong Iowa friends, who have been meeting regularly for over four decades, made their way to Los Angeles to cheer on the Iowa Hawkeyes in their football game against UCLA at the iconic Rose Bowl. This group, known as the “Friday Night Club,” started in 1980 in Stuart, Iowa, as a way for four couples to bond while raising their young children. What began as a small get-together has now blossomed into a nationwide tradition, with the club's members spreading out across the country. Yet, their love for each other and the Hawkeyes has kept them united over the years.
The original members of the Friday Night Club—Nancy and Trent Sturm, Sharon and Bill Sloss, Vicki and Alan Taylor, and Connie and Jerry Vitzthum—created the group as a simple reason to connect every Friday night. Over time, these gatherings became more than just social events; they turned into cherished family traditions that have brought together generations of Iowa fans.

Today, the club’s original members are joined by their grown children, some of whom have children of their own. This week's trip to Los Angeles for the football game marked the latest chapter in this enduring friendship, with a total of 38 club members making the trek to California. Their bond is more than just about football—it’s about community, shared history, and a deep connection to their Iowa roots.
For the group, the excitement of the Hawkeyes taking on UCLA is just another reason to celebrate their friendship. As one member explained, they don’t need a special occasion to get together, but the Hawkeyes provide a perfect excuse to reunite. The club’s members fondly recall gathering to watch football games, basketball games, and even staying up late to cheer on Caitlin Clark and the Iowa women's basketball team. They’ve grown up together, supported each other through the years, and now, they’re passing down their love for Iowa sports to the next generation.
This isn’t just a weekend getaway for these lifelong friends; it’s a tradition that has stood the test of time. Their journey to the Rose Bowl is a testament to the power of friendship and the lasting bond formed over a shared love for Iowa. The Friday Night Club’s legacy lives on, and their story is a reminder that sometimes the most cherished traditions are built on simple, lasting connections. Whether in Iowa or Los Angeles, the spirit of the Hawkeyes and their unwavering friendship will always bring them together.
