Mahayuti Alliance Set for Major Victory in Maharashtra Election 2024
As the election results for Maharashtra’s 2024 Assembly elections roll in, the ruling BJP-led Mahayuti alliance is on the cusp of securing a resounding victory. Early trends have shown a significant lead for the alliance, which is currently dominating with leads in over 200 seats out of the 288 in the state assembly. The opposition Maha Vikas Aghadi (MVA), on the other hand, is trailing far behind with leads in only 50 seats. This has been a tough blow for MVA, which had hoped to make a strong comeback in the state, but the electorate has clearly shown their preference for the BJP and its allies.
Among the key leaders in Mahayuti, Maharashtra Chief Minister Eknath Shinde, along with his deputies Devendra Fadnavis and Ajit Pawar, is leading in their respective constituencies. Shinde, in particular, is showing a commanding lead in his Thane constituency of Kopri-Pachpakhadi, with a margin of over 50,000 votes. Fadnavis, too, is ahead in Nagpur South-West with a comfortable lead, while Ajit Pawar is leading in Baramati, where he is facing a fierce battle against his nephew, Yugendra Pawar.

Celebrations have already begun in BJP offices across the state, as the party looks set to retain power in Maharashtra for another term. With BJP leading in over 120 seats and Shiv Sena (Eknath Shinde faction) at 55, the alliance appears poised to continue its governance. Senior BJP leader Vinod Tawde attributed the win to the unwavering trust the people of Maharashtra have shown in the BJP’s leadership, under Prime Minister Narendra Modi, CM Shinde, and Fadnavis.
In a notable development, Shiv Sena Lok Sabha MP Shrikant Shinde, son of the CM, attributed the victory to those who are upholding the legacy of his late grandfather, Bal Thackeray. The Shinde faction of Shiv Sena, which split from Uddhav Thackeray's Shiv Sena in 2022, has now firmly established itself as the true heir to Bal Thackeray’s vision, especially in the face of fierce competition from Uddhav's camp.
Devendra Fadnavis, in his first reaction to the victory, expressed confidence, stating, “Ek hain toh safe hain” (If we are united, we are safe). This phrase resonated strongly as it reflected the alliance’s cohesive and united front. Even as BJP and Shiv Sena (Shinde faction) consolidate their position, opposition leaders like Sanjay Raut have questioned the legitimacy of the results, suggesting a "big conspiracy" behind the decisive lead of Mahayuti. However, BJP leaders have dismissed such claims, citing the clear mandate from the people.
With the alliance now leading comfortably, the BJP is preparing for its legislative party meeting, which will decide the next steps. It is widely speculated that Devendra Fadnavis may be elevated to the Chief Minister's position given his critical role in the alliance’s victory, although discussions within the Mahayuti alliance leadership will ultimately determine this. The celebrations are expected to continue into the weekend as the alliance looks set to celebrate its landslide victory across Maharashtra.
