Microsoft Faces Major Outlook and Teams Outage Ahead of Thanksgiving
Microsoft experienced a significant outage on Monday, disrupting its widely-used Outlook and Teams services, leaving countless users unable to access email, calendars, and essential communication tools. The outage, which began early in the day, sparked frustration among users worldwide and highlighted the reliance on Microsoft's cloud services for business operations.
By midday Eastern Time, reports from DownDetector indicated over 5,000 user complaints, a number that underlines the widespread nature of the problem. The issue seemed to primarily affect Exchange Online and Teams calendars, two critical components of the Microsoft 365 suite. Microsoft identified a recent system change as the root cause and swiftly began deploying a fix. However, the company acknowledged that manual restarts on some machines were progressing slower than anticipated, delaying full restoration.

Microsoft announced on social media platform X (formerly Twitter) that they had reverted the problematic change and continued mitigation efforts. By noon, approximately 98% of the affected environments had received updates. Despite this progress, many users still faced disruptions, as updates take time to propagate fully across systems.
The timing of this outage added to the frustration, coinciding with the week leading into the Thanksgiving holiday—a busy time for many workplaces finalizing plans before the break. Ironically, some users jokingly embraced the pause, seeing it as an unexpected holiday gift.
