Morning Fire Engulfs Popular Rocky Mount Restaurant, 'Flavors'
A devastating fire early Friday morning has destroyed a beloved restaurant in downtown Rocky Mount. Flavors, a soul food hotspot known for its comforting meals, was gutted by flames that tore through both floors of the building on North Washington Street. Firefighters responded to the scene just after 7:30 a.m. and fought for nearly 40 minutes to bring the blaze under control. Despite their efforts, the damage was severe, and the structure was left charred and blackened, with the second story of the brick building bearing scorch marks.
Owner Jerlado Whitehead was visibly shocked as he arrived at the scene. “Honestly, I don’t even know what to think,” Whitehead shared in an emotional interview. “This is definitely not how I expected to start my morning. I was expecting to come in like a normal day, check on my employees, and get ready for service—but instead, this is what I found.”

The good news, however, is that no one was inside at the time of the fire. Whitehead expressed his gratitude, acknowledging that the situation could have been much worse. While the restaurant's future location is still uncertain, he reassured the community that Flavors would rise again. “This will not be the last of Flavors in Rocky Mount,” he stated firmly, though the decision to rebuild at the same spot or elsewhere will depend on the outcome of investigations and the restaurant's needs moving forward.
The cause of the fire remains under investigation, as authorities continue to assess what sparked the blaze. The damage to Flavors is extensive, but neighboring businesses only experienced minor smoke damage. Despite the heartbreaking loss, Whitehead's resolve to rebuild signals a sense of hope for the future of the iconic eatery. The Rocky Mount Fire Department, which deployed 33 firefighters to the scene, managed to prevent the fire from spreading to adjacent businesses, limiting the overall impact on the area.
