New Strain of Mpox Spreads in the UK: Health Officials Respond
Recent developments regarding the mpox virus, previously known as monkeypox, have raised significant health concerns in the UK. Just this week, two additional cases of a new strain—specifically the Clade 1b variant—were reported among household contacts of the first identified patient in London. This brings the total number of confirmed cases in the UK to three, and all three individuals are currently receiving specialized care at Guy's and St Thomas' NHS Foundation Trust.
Health officials, including Professor Susan Hopkins from the UK Health Security Agency (UKHSA), have emphasized that mpox is highly infectious within households, making the emergence of further cases in close contacts not entirely surprising. Despite this concerning trend, she reassured the public that the overall risk to the UK population remains low. The UKHSA is diligently working to identify all individuals who may have come into contact with the confirmed cases, offering them testing and, if necessary, vaccination to help mitigate the risk of further spread.
The initial case was identified in a patient who had traveled to Africa, where the virus is more prevalent. This individual returned to the UK on October 21, developed flu-like symptoms a day later, and subsequently presented with a rash characterized by pus-filled lesions, which is typical of mpox. This rash can last for several weeks, alongside other symptoms like fever, headaches, and muscle aches.

Clade 1b is particularly notable because it appears to transmit more efficiently between people than other strains. The UKHSA's monitoring efforts are part of a broader initiative to manage the situation effectively and prevent a resurgence of the outbreak seen in previous years, especially during the 2022 global mpox surge, which primarily impacted gay, bisexual, and other men who have sex with men.
It is crucial to understand that mpox spreads primarily through close physical contact with infected individuals or materials. This includes direct contact with rashes or skin lesions, sexual contact, and even contact with contaminated items such as bedding or towels. While the current cases are concerning, they are not indicative of a widespread outbreak in the community, as the virus is currently confined to household contacts.
Internationally, Clade 1b has been reported in several African nations, including the Democratic Republic of Congo, Kenya, and Rwanda. Countries such as Sweden, India, and Germany have also reported cases linked to travel from these areas. In response to the ongoing global situation, the World Health Organization (WHO) declared a public health emergency due to the rapid spread of the mpox strain earlier this year.
In light of this situation, the UK government, led by Health Secretary Wes Streeting, is working closely with health authorities to ensure public safety. This includes procuring vaccines and equipping healthcare professionals with the necessary resources to respond effectively to potential new cases.
