Oregon Keeps Top Spot as College Football Playoff Rankings Get Interesting
The latest College Football Playoff rankings have officially dropped, and once again, the No. 1 spot is held by the Oregon Ducks. For the third consecutive week, Oregon remains at the top, with Ohio State closely following at No. 2. This is a significant moment as we head into the stretch run of the college football season, where teams are jockeying for playoff spots. As expected, the top five teams have remained largely the same, but it's the drama unfolding just outside that is grabbing attention.
At No. 3, the Texas Longhorns have maintained their position, while Penn State and Indiana round out the top five. This gives the Big Ten an impressive representation in the rankings, holding four of the top five spots. However, the real intrigue lies in the battle for spots beyond the top ten. After tough losses by both Brigham Young (BYU) and Tennessee in Week 12, the committee had to make adjustments. BYU, who had been a strong contender, took a major fall down to No. 14. Notre Dame, benefiting from BYU’s slip, moved up to No. 6. Alabama, ever the powerhouse, leapfrogged Miami to claim the No. 7 position, while Tennessee, once sitting in the top ten, now finds itself on the outside looking in at No. 11.

While the SEC remains a dominant force with eight ranked teams, it’s worth noting that the Big Ten isn't far behind with five schools in the rankings. The Big 12, with four teams in the mix, and the ACC, which also features three ranked schools, are holding their own. But the Mountain West has also started to make some noise, with Boise State entering the fray at No. 12, just ahead of other Group of Five schools like Army and Tulane.
Looking at the playoff picture, there’s still much to be decided. With only two more rankings releases before the final set of rankings is revealed on December 8th, the field is shaping up for an intense finish. The new 12-team playoff format means that the top five conference champions are guaranteed a spot, with the top four earning a bye. The top remaining teams in the rankings will secure at-large berths. It’s an exciting setup for college football fans, as every game counts more than ever.
