Over 40 Monkeys Escape from South Carolina Research Facility, Authorities in Search

A startling situation unfolded in Beaufort County, South Carolina, as over 40 monkeys escaped from the Alpha Genesis Primate Research Center late Wednesday night. The primates, Rhesus macaques, were part of a group of young females, weighing around 6 to 7 pounds, and have never been used for research purposes. Fortunately, the authorities have assured the public that these monkeys are too young to carry diseases, although their escape has prompted a major search operation.

The escape has captured the attention of local authorities, with the Yemassee Police Department working in collaboration with the Alpha Genesis staff, wildlife officials, and other agencies. In an effort to safely recapture the animals, thermal imaging cameras and traps have been set up around the area, and officers are closely monitoring their movements. The police have urged local residents to stay alert, keeping their windows and doors secured to prevent any of the primates from wandering into homes.

Alpha Genesis, the research facility where the monkeys are housed, is known for its extensive work with primates in clinical trials. However, the center has faced scrutiny in the past, with reports of escapes dating back to 2016, and even more incidents of escape earlier this year. In fact, these escapes are not entirely new to the facility, which has seen multiple breaches in security over the years. Despite the efforts to improve containment, escapes have continued to occur, raising concerns among animal rights groups and the public.

In addition to the current escape, Alpha Genesis has faced issues with violations from the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) for not properly maintaining enclosures and providing adequate care for the animals. These incidents, which include monkeys being housed in incorrect enclosures and being injured, have drawn criticism from activists who argue that the center’s practices put both the animals and the surrounding community at risk.

Authorities have cautioned anyone who spots a monkey to avoid interacting with it. Instead, they should immediately contact 911. As the search continues, the fate of these escaped monkeys remains uncertain, with both the safety of the animals and the local residents hanging in the balance.
