PSG's Champions League Struggles Continue in Last-Minute Loss to Atletico Madrid
Paris Saint-Germain’s challenging run in the Champions League continued with a dramatic 2-1 home defeat against Atletico Madrid. This third consecutive match without a win left PSG and their fans frustrated, especially given the stakes and the energy they poured into the game. The match, held at Parc des Princes, was a clash filled with intense moments, tactical battles, and ultimately, a heartbreak for the home side as Atletico stole victory in the dying moments.
PSG started with promise, driven by young midfielder Warren Zaire-Emery, who has been a standout in this season’s campaign. At just 18, Zaire-Emery set a record as the youngest player to start 15 games in Champions League history. He marked this milestone in style, netting PSG’s first goal in the 14th minute. Atletico defender Clement Lenglet, who previously played for Barcelona, made a costly error, allowing Ousmane Dembele to intercept the ball inside the box. Dembele set up Zaire-Emery, who executed a perfect chip over Atletico's goalkeeper Jan Oblak to give PSG an early advantage.

However, PSG’s lead was short-lived. Just four minutes later, Atletico Madrid equalized when Nahuel Molina found the back of the net after PSG failed to clear their lines. The quick response from Atletico demonstrated their resilience and kept the match finely balanced, with both sides fighting to control the tempo.
Throughout the second half, PSG largely dominated possession, showing their intent with wave after wave of attacks. PSG’s Bradley Barcola and Achraf Hakimi tested Oblak, who responded with crucial saves, keeping Atletico level. Luis Enrique’s men seemed poised to secure a winning goal, but Atletico's organized defense and strategic play made it challenging for PSG to break through.
As the game moved into injury time, PSG’s hope for a late winner was shattered. Atletico’s Angel Correa, brought on as a substitute, delivered the decisive blow in the 93rd minute. Assisted by Antoine Griezmann, Correa took advantage of PSG's aggressive push for a goal, slotting the ball past Gianluigi Donnarumma to seal a dramatic win. This late goal not only secured three valuable points for Atletico but also added to PSG’s recent Champions League woes.
Now, with four points from four games, PSG’s Champions League campaign is in a precarious position. They face an uphill task as they prepare to travel to Germany to meet Bayern Munich in their next group-stage match. Atletico Madrid, with six points, sits in a slightly more comfortable position and will next take on Sparta Prague.
The defeat underscores the difficulties PSG has faced in Europe’s top competition this season. While their ball possession, shooting stats, and attacking plays were impressive, they struggled to convert dominance into goals and succumbed to Atletico’s clinical finishing. As the team regroups, they will need to address these gaps and find a way to turn their form around to advance beyond the group stage.
