Reddit Faces Major Outage, Leaving Users in the Dark
Reddit, the popular online discussion platform, experienced a significant outage on November 20, 2024, leaving millions of users unable to access their favorite subreddits or share posts. This unexpected downtime caused widespread disruption and sparked conversations across the internet about the reliability of one of the world’s largest social platforms. By late evening, the platform began to recover, but not without hiccups and lingering concerns.
The outage began earlier in the day and rapidly escalated, with users reporting issues loading pages and encountering persistent error messages. Reddit’s critical "Popular" subreddit, a hub for trending posts, was notably affected, remaining inaccessible for hours. Frustrated users turned to platforms like X (formerly Twitter) and Discord to discuss the issue, often with a mix of humor and irritation. Reports from Down Detector highlighted the scale of the problem, with thousands of users logging complaints at the peak of the outage.

As Reddit's development team worked behind the scenes, the company provided limited updates. In a post on X, Reddit acknowledged the issue, stating they were “working on it,” but offered no specific timeline for a resolution. Later, they attributed the outage to a bug introduced in a recent update, which was subsequently fixed. In true Reddit fashion, the explanation was accompanied by a meme, showcasing the platform's characteristic humor even during a crisis.
Despite efforts to stabilize the platform, the recovery process was uneven. While some pages began loading normally by the evening, others continued to display errors or loaded sluggishly. Reddit's infrastructure—a complex system supporting millions of active users—was pushed to its limits. Speculation emerged that a deeper issue with backend servers or content delivery networks (CDNs) might have compounded the problem.
The outage also coincided with notable events on the platform, such as journalist Katie Couric’s first-ever Reddit AMA, prompting some users to humorously link the downtime to the AMA's popularity. However, Reddit has not confirmed any connection between specific events and the disruption.
While outages on large platforms are not uncommon, this incident serves as a reminder of the dependence millions of people have on Reddit for everything from entertainment to community discussions. As the platform gradually returned to normal, users expressed relief but also renewed concerns about stability. Reddit’s downtime may be over, but for many, the memory of a day without memes, debates, and cat pictures will linger.
