Sorbie’s journey began in the small town of Paisley, Scotland, where he was born in 1949. Despite dreams of becoming an artist, he found himself following in the footsteps of his father, learning the basics of cutting hair at his family’s barbershop in Essex. His natural talent became apparent early on, and by 1974, he was making waves in the fashion world with his innovative styles. While working at the famous Vidal Sassoon salon, Sorbie created the “wedge cut,” a sleek and sharply angled haircut that quickly became iconic. His philosophy of continuous reinvention would lead to other inventive styles, including the "wolfman," "sculpture," and the "wave." Sorbie's journey with cancer began in 2019, ultimately leading to his decision to forego further chemotherapy after his bowel cancer spread to his liver. Open about his journey, he explained his choice, reflecting on the strength he found in accepting his condition. Despite his declining health, Sorbie maintained his signature humor, expressing a wish to live life fully and joyfully, finding comfort in simple pleasures with his wife, Carole, and their dog. In interviews, Sorbie candidly shared his frustration with the prognosis but maintained a positive outlook, famously saying, “I’ll go when I’m ready.”
Beyond his revolutionary impact on hairdressing, Sorbie dedicated himself to a compassionate cause, founding My New Hair in 2006, a charity supporting individuals facing medical hair loss. His inspiration came after styling a wig for his sister-in-law during her cancer treatment. Realizing the transformative power of this gesture, he committed his energy to training hairdressers in the art of wig customization for patients experiencing hair loss. Through this foundation, he empowered thousands of hairstylists, establishing new standards in NHS wig services and creating an enduring legacy of kindness and support.
Sorbie’s influence on the world of beauty and fashion, as well as his contributions to the lives of cancer patients, are nothing short of profound. Awarded an MBE by Queen Elizabeth in 2004, he often described this honor as his greatest accolade.
