Storm Bert Brings Snow, Heavy Rain, and 70mph Winds to the UK This Weekend

The UK is bracing for the second named storm of the season, Storm Bert, which is expected to hit with a mix of heavy snow, rain, and powerful winds this weekend. The storm is forecast to bring disruptive weather across large parts of the country, including potential flooding, school closures, and travel delays.

Storm Bert is set to sweep across the UK, bringing gusts of up to 70mph in some regions, with particularly severe conditions predicted for Scotland, northern England, and Wales. The Met Office has issued warnings for snow and ice, especially in highland areas and along the coasts. As the storm approaches, temperatures are expected to plummet, dropping below freezing in many areas, which could cause icy roads and hazardous driving conditions.

The snow has already had a significant impact, with hundreds of schools closed due to the heavy snowfall. In Scotland, more than 114 schools were shut on Thursday, including in the Highland Council area, where students were notified that their exams would be rescheduled. Further closures were reported across Aberdeenshire, Moray, and other parts of Scotland, with additional delays affecting schools in Wales and southwest England. In total, more than 100 schools across the UK were closed or had delayed openings due to the extreme weather.

Aside from snow, the storm will bring heavy rain, especially to parts of southwest England and Wales. Forecasts predict up to 75mm of rain in some areas, with more than 100mm possible in places like Cornwall and parts of Wales. This intense rainfall, combined with snowmelt, could lead to flooding, particularly in low-lying areas.

The storm is expected to cause further travel disruptions, with conditions likely to affect public transport, roads, and airports. The Met Office has warned that travel delays and cancellations are possible, particularly due to slippery roads and snow on high ground. Strong winds are also expected to cause damage to trees and structures, adding to the potential hazards.

As the storm progresses into the weekend, it is anticipated that conditions will gradually improve, with milder air moving in. However, for now, Storm Bert is proving to be a significant challenge for the UK, requiring people to stay vigilant and prepare for the harsh weather conditions.
