The Farrelly Brothers' New Comedy Project Sparks Sequel Hopes, But Not forDumb and Dumber
The Farrelly brothers are back, but not with another Dumb and Dumber sequel—at least not just yet. While the duo’s 1994 comedy classic remains a hallmark of slapstick humor, Bobby and Peter Farrelly have shifted their focus to a new comedy project, Dear Santa , marking their first collaboration on a feature film since Dumb and Dumber To in 2014. This reunion with Jack Black, who plays Satan in the upcoming streaming film, brings a fresh twist to their comedic sensibilities, but their fans can't help but wonder about the possibility of revisiting Dumb and Dumber once more.

While Bobby Farrelly admits that he’s always keeping a mental note of potential jokes for a new Dumb and Dumber installment, Peter Farrelly has made it clear that they are not ruling out the idea entirely. He still jots down ideas for Harry Dunne and Lloyd Christmas—Jeff Daniels and Jim Carrey’s iconic characters—and says that the door remains open for more antics in the future. Though neither of the Farrellys’ previous follow-ups— Dumb and Dumber To or the prequel Dumb and Dumberer: When Harry Met Lloyd —matched the original’s charm, the Farrellys aren’t ready to say goodbye to the lovable duo.
Interestingly, Bobby Farrelly suggests that they may even wait another decade before embarking on another sequel. After all, the 20th anniversary of Dumb and Dumber marked the last reunion, and with the 30th anniversary fast approaching, the Farrellys might find the right time to revisit the characters again, potentially with the duo in their 60s. There's a strange joy to be found in imagining Harry and Lloyd still stumbling through life’s comical disasters well into their later years. But before that, Farrelly has his sights set on another nostalgic project: There’s Something About Mary .
There’s Something About Mary —another Farrelly classic—continues to hold a special place in the brothers' hearts. Despite its massive success in 1998, a sequel never materialized. Yet, Bobby Farrelly has not completely closed the door on the possibility of a second film. According to Bobby, if they ever come up with the right idea, they would jump at the chance to bring back Cameron Diaz as the bubbly Mary Jensen and Ben Stiller as the endlessly awkward Ted Stroehmann. He emphasizes that the love for the characters is what would drive them to revisit the story, not just the financial potential. So, while a sequel hasn't happened in 26 years, it’s not entirely out of the question.
The Farrelly brothers seem to be content with the idea of revisiting past characters—just not at the cost of the material. Dumb and Dumber may eventually see another sequel, but it would need to feel right. For now, it’s their new project with Jack Black that’s stealing the spotlight, and with their renewed creative energy, the future of Farrelly-led comedy remains as unpredictable as ever. Let’s just hope it won’t take another 26 years before we get to see Mary and Ted on screen again!
