Trump Appoints Scott Turner as HUD Secretary: A Former NFL Player's New Role in Housing and Urban Development
In a surprising but strategic move, President-elect Donald Trump has nominated Scott Turner, a former NFL player, to serve as the Secretary of the Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD). Turner’s nomination was announced on November 22, 2024, and if confirmed by the Senate, he will take the helm of an agency that plays a crucial role in addressing the nation’s housing needs, enforcing fair housing laws, and providing support to low-income families.
Turner, best known for his career as an NFL player with the Washington Redskins, San Diego Chargers, and Denver Broncos, has since transitioned into politics and public service. After retiring from football, he pursued a career in public policy, which led him to become the executive director of the White House Opportunity and Revitalization Council. Under his leadership, the council focused on fostering private investment in economically distressed communities across the U.S. by leveraging the opportunity zones created through the Tax Cuts and Jobs Act of 2017. This initiative helped direct billions of dollars into areas that needed it the most, aiming to revitalize these regions by supporting real estate projects and business operations.

Trump praised Turner’s efforts in this regard, highlighting how Turner helped lead an unprecedented effort that transformed some of the country’s most distressed communities. As HUD Secretary, Turner would be tasked with overseeing a vast range of programs aimed at improving housing access, affordability, and quality for Americans. This includes administering rental subsidies for low-income families and ensuring that fair housing laws are effectively implemented.
In addition to his time with the White House Opportunity Council, Turner has been a prominent advocate for educational reforms. He currently serves as chair of the Center for Education Opportunity at the America First Policy Institute, a think tank closely aligned with Trump’s administration. His experience in both policy and community revitalization efforts, alongside his strong leadership background, has earned him a reputation as a capable advocate for economic development.
Turner’s journey from the NFL to a key position in government is a testament to his adaptability and commitment to serving the public. Despite a brief political career in Texas, where he served in the state legislature and ran for Congress, his focus has remained on creating opportunities for underprivileged communities. This background positions him well for the challenges he will face at HUD.
As Turner moves forward with this nomination, his supporters argue that his blend of business acumen, leadership experience, and passion for revitalizing distressed areas make him an ideal choice for HUD Secretary. His nomination, however, must be confirmed by the Senate, a process that will likely begin in January 2025. The outcome of this process will determine whether Turner can lead HUD in a way that continues the momentum of revitalizing America’s most vulnerable neighborhoods.
