Vito the Pug Triumphs as Best in Show at the 2024 National Dog Show
Vito, a 2.5-year-old pug with charmingly sympathetic eyes and a robust physique, has captured hearts and made history by winning the coveted "Best in Show" title at the 92nd annual National Dog Show. Hosted at the Greater Philadelphia Expo Center and broadcast on NBC, this prestigious event saw Vito outshine approximately 2,000 competitors representing 205 different breeds. This marks the first time in over two decades that a pug has claimed this top honor, adding a remarkable chapter to the breed's history.
The journey to victory was no small feat. Vito first claimed victory in the Toy Group, showcasing his poise, conformity to breed standards, and captivating presence. From there, he advanced to compete against six other group winners, including breeds as varied as the Welsh terrier, giant schnauzer, Clumber spaniel, Lhasa apso, Berger Picard, and Ibizan hound. Ultimately, Vito emerged victorious, with Verde, the Welsh terrier, securing second place as Reserve Best in Show.

For Vito’s co-owner, Carolyn Koch of Chapel Hill, North Carolina, the win was an emotional triumph. Speaking with pride, she revealed that Vito has already amassed 25 "Best in Show" titles during his budding career. This achievement, however, marks a pinnacle moment in his legacy.
Judges at the National Dog Show evaluate canines based on their appearance, temperament, and how well they embody the ideal characteristics of their respective breeds. Vito’s unique combination of charm, physicality, and precision in meeting pug breed standards made him a standout in the competition.
