Winter Weather Alerts Disrupt Thanksgiving Travel Across the US
As millions prepare for Thanksgiving travel, winter weather warnings are impacting plans nationwide. Two major storm systems are creating hazardous conditions, bringing heavy rain, snow, and strong winds to significant parts of the U.S. These systems, spanning from the Pacific Northwest to the Northeast, are expected to cause travel delays on roads and at airports, making it a challenging start to the holiday season.
In California, an atmospheric river is causing severe weather, with Northern California seeing record-breaking rainfall. Some areas have received over 20 inches in just three days, leading to life-threatening flooding. Strong winds and heavy mountain snow are adding to the chaos in the Pacific Northwest and beyond. The Sierra Nevada region could see multiple feet of snow by Saturday evening, making travel treacherous for those in affected areas.

Meanwhile, the Northeast isn’t being spared. A lingering low-pressure system is producing rain and heavy snow, particularly in higher elevations across Pennsylvania, New York, and New England. The National Weather Service has issued winter storm warnings for parts of northeast Pennsylvania and central New York, where accumulations of up to a foot are possible. Gusty winds are also increasing the likelihood of power outages and airport delays in the region.
Looking ahead to the peak Thanksgiving travel days, conditions may remain unsettled in some areas. By midweek, parts of the Rockies and central states could experience active weather, including snow in Colorado and rain in the lower Mississippi Valley. The East and West Coasts, however, appear to avoid significant disruptions for now.
Thanksgiving Day itself may bring a blast of cold air to the central and eastern states, with temperatures dropping below seasonal averages. Travelers are advised to stay updated on weather forecasts as conditions evolve, especially with significant snowfall and freezing temperatures anticipated through early December.
Stay safe, check weather updates regularly, and plan accordingly to make your Thanksgiving travel as smooth as possible.
