Winter Weather Causes Widespread School Closures Across Aberdeenshire and Beyond
The weather has taken a bitter turn across Scotland, with snow and ice warnings leading to the closure of nearly 100 schools in the northern regions. As temperatures plummeted overnight, schools and nurseries in Aberdeenshire, the Highlands, and parts of Moray were forced to close or adjust their schedules. The Met Office issued several yellow weather warnings, alerting residents to the hazardous conditions caused by snow, sleet, and ice, particularly in rural and coastal areas.
Aberdeenshire has seen some of the heaviest snowfall, with temperatures dropping to as low as -11.2°C (11.8°F) in places like Braemar, marking the coldest start to the winter season in 26 years. Due to these extreme conditions, around 46 schools across the region were closed, while many others opened late or struggled with transportation disruptions. In the Highlands, 25 schools and 16 nurseries were shut, while Moray Council also closed several schools and nurseries, impacting thousands of students.

The ongoing severe weather has made travel conditions treacherous, with icy roads and snow-covered paths causing disruptions. While some train services between Keith and Huntly were delayed earlier, the lines have since reopened. However, travel warnings remain in place, urging motorists to take extra care, particularly in the Grampians and Highlands, where temperatures have been consistently below freezing.
