Affordable Christmas Hams Shine in Taste Test Surprises
When it comes to Christmas, a beautifully glazed ham often takes center stage on Australian holiday tables. But, as recent taste tests by consumer advocacy group Choice reveal, price doesn’t always dictate quality when choosing the perfect ham for your festive feast.
In a blind evaluation of 10 supermarket hams, IGA's Seven Mile Premium Double Smoked Leg Ham emerged victorious with a score of 79%, thanks to its smoky aroma, moist texture, and balanced flavor. Remarkably, this premium option cost only $12 per kilogram, proving to be both a culinary and financial win for shoppers. Experts praised it as a standout, highlighting its exceptional balance and appealing presentation.

Interestingly, some of the least expensive hams also performed well. IGA's Naturally Smoked Leg Ham Bone in Fully Cooked and Woolworths' Bone In Half Leg Ham , both priced at just $8 per kilogram, tied for second place alongside Aldi’s Specially Selected Premium Triple Smoked Half Leg Ham ($13.49/kg). These options delivered impressive flavors and textures, debunking the myth that higher prices guarantee superior taste.
On the flip side, Coles' Finest Free-Range Triple Smoked Leg Ham , priced at $15.50 per kilogram, landed at the bottom of the rankings with a score of 57%. Judges described its flavor as unpleasant and noted an odd spice-like aroma with a lingering sour aftertaste. Despite its premium branding and free-range certification, this ham failed to deliver the festive joy expected at its price point.
For those opting for budget-friendly hams, enhancing their flavor is straightforward. Choice’s test coordinator, Fiona Mair, recommends glazing, pairing with a complementary sauce, and careful cooking to avoid drying out the meat.
As we approach the holiday season, these findings highlight a valuable takeaway: the best choices for your Christmas table might not come with a hefty price tag. So, whether you shop at IGA, Aldi, or Woolworths, there are quality options available to suit every budget—proving once again that the spirit of Christmas doesn’t have to cost a fortune.
