African Christmas Market in Montreal Celebrates Creativity and Luxury
The African Christmas Market in Old Montreal is creating a festive buzz this holiday season. Hosted by the “Pagne at Home” concept store, this vibrant event is more than just a market—it's a celebration of African culture, craftsmanship, and entrepreneurial spirit. With the picturesque Old Port as its backdrop, the market is an opportunity to discover unique and luxurious creations by African designers and artisans, all while embracing the holiday spirit.
Stelly Tchana, the visionary founder of Pagne at Home, brings her personal history to this initiative. Growing up with African luxury as the child of a diplomat, Tchana noticed a gap in Montreal’s market for showcasing Africa’s rich design heritage. Her mission became clear: to provide a platform for talented designers from both Montreal and Africa. As she puts it, “Montreal is one of the biggest capitals in the world, and it’s the perfect place to show that Africa is also luxury and fashion.”

This year’s market showcases a diverse array of products, from exquisite fashion and jewelry to food and sustainable drinkware. Attendees can explore brands hailing from countries such as Mali, Côte d’Ivoire, Ghana, and Nigeria, each bringing its unique perspective to the event. Designers like Sume Ndumbe-Eyoh, co-founder of the luxury fashion brand Eloli, share their passion for introducing Montrealers to contemporary African styles. Similarly, Ndeye Sene Mbye’s drinkware company Origin Planete emphasizes sustainability while celebrating Africa’s vibrant colors and patterns.
One standout feature is the inclusion of specialty food items, such as African-inspired pastries, jams, and even unique spices like Cameroon’s Penja pepper. Cindy Matsi, who grows this rare pepper, highlights its exceptional health benefits and culinary versatility. These offerings provide attendees with a taste of Africa’s diverse and rich culinary traditions.
For Tchana and the featured entrepreneurs, the African Christmas Market is more than a commercial event. It’s a chance to redefine perceptions and share Africa’s story through creativity, innovation, and cultural pride. As she enthusiastically invites, “Come and see Africa from another point of view. You’ll be amazed and inspired by what you discover.”
The market runs through December 22, offering visitors a chance to find that perfect holiday gift while immersing themselves in a joyous celebration of African excellence.
