Arteta Defends Odegaard Substitution in Arsenal's Frustrating Draw Against Everton
Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta has come under scrutiny after his decision to substitute captain Martin Odegaard during the Gunners' goalless draw with Everton. The match, held at the Emirates, ended in frustration for Arteta’s side, who failed to capitalize on Liverpool’s 2-2 draw with Fulham. This left Arsenal still six points behind the Premier League leaders. The decision to take off Odegaard, who was not having his best game but is typically key to Arsenal’s attacking play, raised some eyebrows, especially given the importance of the match in terms of chasing Liverpool at the top.
Arteta confirmed after the match that Odegaard’s substitution in the 62nd minute was purely tactical and not due to any fitness concerns, alongside Declan Rice, who was withdrawn due to a minor injury. “With Declan, I had to take him out because he was feeling something,” Arteta explained. “And with Martin, it was a tactical decision to try to change their rhythm, especially on that side.” While the reasoning behind the change seemed logical in a strategic sense, many questioned whether it was the right call, especially as Arsenal struggled to create clear chances in the final stages of the game.

Odegaard had spurned a couple of good opportunities in the first half and wasn’t able to produce his usual creative spark. Despite this, the decision to replace him with young Ethan Nwaneri was a bold one, and the Gunners were unable to break down Everton's defense after the change. Arteta, however, stood by his decision, acknowledging that football can be unpredictable: "If Ethan comes in and scores a goal, is he a great sub? If he doesn’t, you have taken your captain out. That’s football." The manager also reflected on the overall performance, highlighting that Arsenal dominated possession, restricted Everton's chances, and defended well but lacked the cutting edge in the final third.
In a game where Arsenal’s dominance was clear, Arteta expressed his disappointment with the result: "I feel very disappointed not to win the game, because obviously there is only one team which deserves to win, which is Arsenal." Despite their control of the match, Arsenal couldn’t find the back of the net, leaving Arteta to admit that his side needed to be more clinical in front of goal.
Meanwhile, at Anfield, Liverpool's resilience was on display as they fought back to secure a 2-2 draw against Fulham, despite playing with ten men after Andrew Robertson’s red card in the 17th minute. Liverpool’s manager Arne Slot praised his team's character, especially in handling the adversity of playing with a man down, while Arsenal fans hoped their team would show similar resolve in their pursuit of the title. With Arsenal's failure to secure three points, the pressure is mounting as they continue to chase Liverpool at the top of the Premier League.
