Billy Atkins Seizes His Moment at James Madison University
James Madison University’s quarterback Billy Atkins is ready to shine in the upcoming Boca Raton Bowl, a game that represents a pivotal moment in his football journey. Just a few weeks ago, Atkins was honored during the program’s Senior Day, reflecting on his four-year career in Harrisonburg, which has often seen him in the backup role. While his journey has not been marked by numerous accolades, this week he is stepping into the spotlight, set to start for the Dukes against Western Kentucky in the prestigious bowl game.
Atkins’ story is one of persistence and resilience. Entering this season, he had just one career start under his belt. However, through a combination of injuries and opportunity, he’s now the one under center, poised to take full advantage of this chance. “It truly is a blessing,” Atkins says, acknowledging the difficult path he’s traveled to reach this point. “I could not have written this up any better. This is a crazy experience for me personally as a player going through all the adversity I did to where I am now.”

The road to this opportunity has not been easy, but Atkins has embraced the journey. During his time at JMU, he’s been surrounded by different coaches, each playing a significant role in his development. His first position coach, Tino Sunseri, who later moved on to UCLA, helped Atkins grow early in his career. Sunseri’s expertise, especially with quarterbacks, helped shape Atkins’ understanding of the game. Atkins fondly remembers Sunseri’s coaching, particularly his knowledge of coverages and offensive strategies. “He was a heck of a coach,” Atkins says, appreciating the guidance that set him up for future success.
As his career progressed, Atkins had the opportunity to work with Dean Kennedy, JMU’s new offensive coordinator, who brought a fresh perspective. Under Kennedy’s tutelage, Atkins gained a deeper understanding of the run game, complementing his passing skills. "I got to basically combine my passing game knowledge with his run-game knowledge," Atkins explains. "Now I feel probably the most confident I have ever been in my career."
That confidence couldn’t have come at a better time, as Atkins is about to lead his team in their second-ever bowl game. With the Dukes’ regular starter Alonza Barnett III and backup Dylan Morris unavailable, Atkins will carry the mantle of leadership. Despite stepping into the starting role, Atkins has remained grounded in his approach. He has always prepared as though his chance could come at any moment, understanding the unpredictable nature of football. "It truly is one play away, and it’s happened multiple times to me in my career," Atkins reflects. "You never know when that play is going to take place, but you have to be ready, not only for yourself, but for the guys around you."
Atkins knows that his moment is a culmination of years of hard work, patience, and learning. Throughout this season, he’s experienced a sense of camaraderie with his quarterback room that he hadn’t felt in previous years. Despite the inevitable competition, Atkins says the group has always been focused on supporting one another. "We’re so close-knit," he shares. "We’re always trying to just help each other be the best player we can for the team."
For Atkins, this bowl game is the culmination of everything he has learned and worked for. He’s ready to embrace his opportunity and lead his team with the confidence and preparation that has defined his entire career.
