All three succumbed to severe symptoms, including cardiac arrest and shock caused by food poisoning. Arsenic, a highly toxic substance, was found in their blood during postmortem examinations.

Shockingly, the cake’s baker, Zeli Terezinha Silva dos Anjos, 61, is among the survivors. She remains hospitalized after consuming two slices of her creation, which, according to tests, contained the highest levels of arsenic. Alongside her, a 10-year-old boy—believed to be a family member—also exhibited symptoms and is receiving medical care.
Authorities are probing the possibility of intentional poisoning. During a search of Zeli's home, they discovered several expired food items, including a suspicious bottle containing an unidentified white liquid. Investigators have sent the cake for laboratory testing, with results expected soon. Suspicion deepened when the police ordered the exhumation of Zeli’s late husband, who reportedly died of food poisoning in September—a death initially deemed natural.
