Chargers Make History with Rare Fair Catch Free Kick Field Goal
In an extraordinary moment during a Thursday night game against the Denver Broncos, the Los Angeles Chargers capitalized on an obscure NFL rule that hadn’t been seen in nearly 50 years. With just eight seconds left in the first half, and the Broncos leading 21-10, Denver punted the ball away hoping to run out the clock. However, the play took an unexpected turn when the Broncos were called for fair catch interference, giving the Chargers an incredible opportunity for a rare "fair catch free kick."
This unique rule allows a team to attempt a field goal from the spot where the fair catch interference penalty occurred, with no rush from the defense. The ball doesn’t need to be snapped, and the kicker is free to take the kick at his leisure. With the penalty moving the ball 15 yards closer, Chargers kicker Cameron Dicker was lined up to attempt a 57-yard kick. The sideline was filled with confusion, as neither team seemed to fully grasp the rare scenario unfolding before them. However, for Dicker and his teammates, this wasn’t an unfamiliar situation. In fact, the Chargers had discussed the possibility of a fair catch kick in their special teams meetings.

Dicker, prepared and calm, nailed the kick, sending the ball through the uprights and cutting the Broncos' lead to 21-13 going into halftime. This made Dicker’s 57-yard attempt the longest successful fair catch free kick in NFL history, surpassing the previous record of 52 yards set by Paul Hornung back in 1964. The last successful attempt of this nature was made in 1976 by Ray Wersching, a kicker for the then-San Diego Chargers.
Despite the rarity of the fair catch free kick, the Chargers’ special teams unit had been preparing for such an event. Dicker mentioned that the team discusses this situation every week, and although the rules were a bit baffling to some on the sideline, it didn’t throw the Chargers off course. "It was a normal thing for us," Dicker said after the game. "We talk about it every week, so it was just a regular thing to us."
This kick stands as a testament to the Chargers' preparation and Dicker’s precision. It was a moment that not only added to the score but also highlighted the obscure but fascinating nature of the NFL’s rulebook.
