Copenhagen Dominates Hearts in UEFA Conference League, But Hopes Still Alive for Scottish Side
In a crucial UEFA Conference League match on December 12, Copenhagen delivered a commanding 2-0 victory over Hearts of Midlothian, dampening the Scottish club’s chances of advancing from the group stage. The match, held at Copenhagen's Parken Stadium, saw Hearts struggle to make any significant impact, with the Danish side controlling much of the play.
The first half was a largely uneventful affair, with Hearts holding firm defensively but unable to mount any real attacking threat. Copenhagen, on the other hand, pressed high and controlled possession, but were unable to break the deadlock before the interval. Hearts can count themselves fortunate to have entered the halftime break level, as defender James Penrice made a crucial intervention to deny former Celtic winger Mohamed Elyounoussi a tap-in.

However, the second half quickly turned against Hearts. Just three minutes after the restart, Copenhagen took the lead through 18-year-old Amin Chiakha. The goal came from a well-worked move, with Kevin Diks finding Elyounoussi, whose shot was saved by Hearts' goalkeeper Craig Gordon. Chiakha was in the right place at the right time, tapping home from close range. The goal was confirmed after a VAR check, much to the dismay of the Hearts defense.
Hearts' hopes of responding were further dashed when they were awarded a penalty after Gordon was adjudged to have fouled Chiakha. A VAR review confirmed the decision, and Diks confidently slotted the ball past Gordon to double Copenhagen’s lead in the 78th minute. With no shots on target in the match, Hearts were never likely to mount a comeback, and the result sealed their fate in Copenhagen.
While the loss was disappointing, Hearts' hopes of progressing to the knockout stages are not entirely extinguished. Their qualification now hinges on their final group-stage match against Petrocub of Moldova, which will be played at Tynecastle next week. Hearts will need a much-improved performance to secure the three points they require to keep their Conference League dreams alive.
After the match, former Hearts players and analysts were quick to voice their disappointment. Michael Stewart, a former midfielder for the club, described the result as “bitterly disappointing,” while Ryan McGowan, another ex-Hearts defender, noted that the team had not done enough to earn even a draw. The defeat leaves Hearts in a precarious position, needing a victory against Petrocub to progress.
Manager Neil Critchley will be under pressure to get his side back on track for that final crucial match, as Hearts are still battling for their place in European competition after a tough campaign. However, the performance in Copenhagen raised questions about the team's ability to compete at this level, particularly after struggling to cope with Copenhagen's dominance in the second half. The Danish side’s press and quick transitions overwhelmed Hearts, and Critchley will need to make adjustments before next week’s decisive encounter.
