In a surprising turn of events, Dan Ashworth has parted ways with Manchester United just five months after stepping into the role of sporting director. His tenure, marked by high-profile signings and significant structural changes, has come to an abrupt end following a meeting with United’s leadership, including chief executive Omar Berrada, at Old Trafford on Saturday.
Ashworth joined Manchester United in July 2024 after an extended negotiation process with Newcastle United, where he was placed on gardening leave earlier in the year. United secured his services for a reported compensation of £2-3 million—a far cry from Newcastle’s initial demand of £20 million. Ashworth's arrival was intended to signify a new era under the leadership of Sir Jim Ratcliffe and INEOS, with the goal of revitalizing the club’s footballing operations.
