Delhi's Air Quality Shows Improvement as Stage IV Curbs Lifted
The air quality in Delhi-NCR has shown a significant improvement, prompting the Centre’s air quality panel to lift Stage IV restrictions under the Graded Response Action Plan (GRAP). As of Tuesday, the 24-hour average Air Quality Index (AQI) was recorded at 369, marking a decline from more severe levels in recent weeks. The improvement has been attributed to favorable meteorological conditions, as forecasted by the India Meteorological Department (IMD) and the Indian Institute of Tropical Meteorology.
Under Stage IV restrictions, stringent measures were imposed to combat hazardous pollution levels. These included a complete ban on construction activities, the prohibition of non-essential polluting trucks from entering Delhi, and the transition of most school classes to hybrid learning, with the exception of grades 10 and 12. The revocation of these measures reflects a more optimistic outlook for air quality in the region.

The GRAP is a dynamic and graded framework designed to respond to varying levels of air pollution. It mandates specific actions based on the AQI, aiming to mitigate the adverse health effects of air pollution. Stage IV represents one of the most severe response levels, activated when pollution crosses critical thresholds.
Although the AQI still falls within the "very poor" category, the recent dip signals a step towards better conditions. Efforts to address the persistent challenge of air pollution in Delhi remain essential, especially as the winter season often exacerbates the issue with stagnant air and increased emissions from heating activities.
Residents and commuters can also breathe a small sigh of relief, as activities previously restricted under Stage IV can now resume. However, it remains crucial for all stakeholders to continue adopting environmentally conscious practices to sustain the downward trend in pollution levels.
This development underscores the importance of coordinated action and responsive governance in addressing environmental challenges. The lifting of restrictions provides a glimmer of hope, but it also serves as a reminder of the ongoing work needed to ensure cleaner and healthier air for all.
