Yaniv Perets and Ruslan Khazheyev are developing well in the AHL, but Carolina needed a seasoned hand to step into the backup role. After spending the start of the season unsigned, Tokarski kept himself prepared for an opportunity. In early November, he accepted a professional tryout with the Chicago Wolves, the Hurricanes' AHL affiliate, following Andersen’s injury. Tokarski’s impact was immediate, as he posted back-to-back shutouts and compiled a 4-1 record with a stellar .933 save percentage and a 1.91 goals-against average. His impressive play paved the way for Carolina to offer him a one-year, two-way contract.
Tokarski isn’t new to high-pressure situations. With a resume that includes a World Junior gold medal, a Memorial Cup, and two Calder Cup championships, he’s proven his ability to thrive under pressure. His history with Hurricanes Goaltending Coach Paul Schonfelder, dating back to their 2019 Calder Cup win with the Charlotte Checkers, only reinforces his fit within the organization. Schonfelder emphasized Tokarski’s ability to bring calm and confidence to the locker room, praising his experience and professionalism.
While Tokarski hasn’t appeared in an NHL game since February 2023, his primary role with the Canes is to offer steady support to Kochetkov.
