EasyJet Flight Diverts in Chaotic Weather Drama, Leaves Passengers Stranded
An EasyJet flight from Glasgow to Southampton faced an extraordinary turn of events when severe weather conditions forced it to divert to Bournemouth Airport. The unexpected diversion left passengers stuck on the plane for hours, transforming what should have been a straightforward journey into a frustrating ordeal.
The flight, aboard an Airbus A319, attempted to land in Southampton amid powerful winds but had to abort just 120 meters above the ground. After circling the area in search of a safe landing window, the pilots made the call to divert to Bournemouth. Unfortunately, what followed only compounded the challenges.

Passengers remained onboard for over two hours after landing in Bournemouth as the crew worked to determine whether they could return to Southampton. However, with both Bournemouth and Southampton airports nearing curfew, travelers were ultimately instructed to disembark in Bournemouth at around 9:20 PM. This left many grappling with unexpected travel arrangements.
Among the passengers was 26-year-old broadcast engineer Owen Cranston, who described the ordeal as "one of those situations where you just laugh because there’s nothing else to do." While Cranston managed to rely on local family contacts, others weren’t as fortunate. For instance, an older couple who had parked their car at Southampton Airport found themselves stranded overnight in Bournemouth, needing to take a train the next day to retrieve their vehicle.
Passengers faced further inconvenience when their checked luggage had to be manually distributed as the bag carousel was not operational. Many described the situation as chaotic and expressed frustration at the airline's handling of the incident.
EasyJet has since apologized for the disruption, citing safety concerns as the priority and attributing the confusion to local regulations and airport curfews. The airline promised reimbursement for additional travel costs incurred by passengers and acknowledged the inconvenience caused by the extended delays.
This episode highlights the complexities of air travel during adverse weather conditions and the critical role of effective communication in ensuring passenger satisfaction, even in unavoidable circumstances. While the diversion was a matter of safety, the sentiment among passengers was clear: the airline's response left much to be desired.
