Everton Fan's Dream Merseyside Derby Derailed After Long Journey from Australia

A young Everton fan's dream of witnessing the historic Merseyside derby at Goodison Park came to a crushing halt just hours before kick-off. Mackenzie, a 15-year-old from Sydney, had saved up his entire savings to make the long journey to England for what was supposed to be the final league derby at Goodison Park, marking the end of 130 years of Everton’s football history at this iconic ground. However, despite his dedication and excitement, the match was postponed just four hours before the scheduled start time due to the severe weather impact of Storm Darragh.

Mackenzie, who had spent months planning his trip, had even been told by his mother, Rita, that it would be impossible to afford the travel costs. The teenager, however, was determined and managed to save enough money to make his dream come true. Rita shared that Mackenzie’s desire to attend the game became clear after a previous trip to England when he mentioned his wish to experience a Merseyside derby at Goodison Park. His persistence paid off, and although Rita had reservations, she couldn’t stop him once he had the funds to make it happen. “We’re very proud of him,” she remarked, speaking to Radio Merseyside.

The young fan arrived in England and was able to attend Everton’s midweek 4-0 victory over Wolves, but his real hope was always the derby. However, on Saturday morning, his dream was shattered when the match, scheduled for a 12:30 PM kick-off, was postponed. The weather conditions caused by Storm Darragh had made it unsafe to proceed, with the postponement being announced at 8:30 AM, just hours before the match was supposed to begin.

The 245th Merseyside derby was especially significant as it was set to be the last league meeting between the two clubs at Goodison Park before Everton's move to the new Bramley-Moore Dock stadium next season. The sense of anticipation for this milestone game made it even more painful for fans like Mackenzie, who had traveled thousands of miles to see it.

In the midst of his disappointment, Mackenzie’s story is a testament to the dedication of football fans, especially those who travel far and wide for their love of the game. Despite the setback, he had the chance to experience Everton’s victory over Wolves, but the derbies at Goodison Park will now remain a missed dream for him – at least until the next chapter in his football journey.
