Facebook and Instagram Outage: Meta Almost Resolves Major Disruption
Meta platforms, including Facebook, Instagram, and WhatsApp, experienced a significant outage that disrupted services for thousands of users worldwide on Wednesday afternoon. Reports of issues began to surface around 12:30 p.m. EST, with DownDetector seeing a sharp spike in complaints from Facebook users, followed closely by Instagram, WhatsApp, and even Meta's newer app, Threads. At its peak, over 100,000 Facebook users reported issues, while Instagram also saw tens of thousands of complaints, indicating widespread connectivity problems.
By late afternoon, the situation seemed to improve. Meta issued a statement just before 5:30 p.m., acknowledging that the outage was nearly resolved, with the company stating that it was “99% of the way there.” The problem had affected various services, including Facebook Ads Manager, Messenger API for Instagram, and WhatsApp Business API. At the time, Meta had managed to reduce the number of outage reports significantly. For example, Facebook’s outages had dropped to just over 1,200, and Instagram’s complaints fell from a peak of 68,000 to around 1,900.

While many users were unable to access their accounts or experienced error messages when trying to use the apps, Meta’s engineers were quick to act. Some users saw a message stating, “We’re working on getting this fixed as soon as we can,” signaling that the issue was being addressed. Meta apologized for the inconvenience caused, thanking users for their patience.
The outage comes just months after a similar disruption in March that affected millions globally. Meta cited a technical issue as the cause of the earlier outage, which lasted for more than two hours. Although the technical details of the current issue have not been fully disclosed, the swift response from Meta’s team suggests they are working diligently to prevent further disruptions.
This outage also comes amidst a series of tech disruptions seen in other major companies. For instance, Microsoft faced a significant outage in November, impacting its platforms for over a day. Earlier, Reddit experienced multiple outages within a 24-hour period. These repeated disruptions highlight the ongoing challenges tech giants face in maintaining seamless service delivery for their vast user bases.
So, while the outage affected millions and left users frustrated, Meta's quick acknowledgment and near-resolution of the problem provide reassurance that they are working tirelessly to ensure their platforms remain stable and accessible for all users. The company’s commitment to resolving the issue as quickly as possible highlights its dedication to user experience, even during unexpected technical failures.
