Minister Sajjan, who oversees the Pacific Economic Development Agency of Canada, will attend Saturday’s show alongside his daughter. His acceptance of the tickets came only after clearance from the federal Ethics Commissioner, as clarified by his press secretary. Additionally, Sajjan has announced a personal $1,500 donation to the Greater Vancouver Food Bank to underscore his commitment to community support. However, critics, including the Canadian Taxpayers’ Federation, argue that all PavCo-related tickets should be leveraged for charitable fundraising rather than offered to officials.
The Mayor of Vancouver, Ken Sim, also faced scrutiny after receiving an invitation from PavCo. However, he declined the offer, opting instead to purchase tickets personally for himself and his family. Sim expressed excitement about Swift’s presence in Vancouver, noting the significant global attention the tour brings to the city. This sentiment is echoed by Spencer Chandra-Herbert, the provincial tourism minister, who emphasized that any distributed tickets should prioritize economic or community benefits.
PavCo, known for hosting dignitaries and stakeholders at BC Place events, defended its approach. The organization highlighted its community benefit program, which has raised over $1 million for local charities through ticket donations and suite auctions. For instance, suites for Swift’s Vancouver concerts fetched as much as $320,000 at charity galas. Nevertheless, critics remain concerned about transparency and accountability regarding the distribution of tickets.
