Finn Allen Faces Tough Start in Big Bash League with Back-to-Back Ducks for Perth Scorchers
The Big Bash League has been a challenging start for Perth Scorchers’ recent import, Finn Allen, whose performance has plunged to new lows. Despite coming with high expectations after an impressive career in New Zealand cricket, Allen’s time in the orange jersey has yet to yield the fireworks that fans were hoping for.
The explosive opener, renowned for his ability to clear the boundary, had a tough day at the office again on Thursday, recording his second consecutive duck in as many games. The 24-year-old right-hander’s first four innings in the competition have produced a dismal tally of just six, four, and two ducks. This string of poor performances has raised concerns among fans and analysts alike, as the promising talent seems to be struggling to adapt to the Big Bash environment.

Allen’s pre-season form had given fans a glimpse of his potential when he smashed the opening delivery of the tournament into the stands, setting high expectations for his debut season. However, that promising start was quickly followed by disappointment. His next ball in the competition ended his innings when fellow Kiwi Adam Milne struck with a perfect delivery, sending the stumps flying.
Things didn’t get better in the following matches. Despite showing glimpses of his ability with a boundary in his second innings in Hobart, Allen was dismissed on the very next ball. His struggles continued in Melbourne, where he faced a tough pitch but managed only three frustrating balls before being dismissed for a duck. On Boxing Day against Brisbane Heat, Allen's nightmare continued, lasting just five balls before being sent back to the pavilion without scoring.
This unfortunate string of low scores has led the Scorchers to rethink their batting lineup. In a bid to inject some stability at the top of the order, they swapped Allen’s opening partner, Englishman Keaton Jennings, hoping for a better partnership. Rising star Cooper Connolly has also been asked to step in, facing the pressure of walking in at the crease in the opening overs for four consecutive games.
The Perth Scorchers are facing a selection dilemma. While Allen’s potential remains undeniable, his recent form poses serious questions about his place in the starting lineup. The Scorchers will need to find a solution quickly if they are to return to their winning ways and make a mark in the Big Bash League this season.
