Harrison Bailey’s Journey Leads to Sun Bowl Spotlight for Louisville
Former Tennessee quarterback Harrison Bailey is stepping into the spotlight again, this time leading Louisville football in the prestigious Tony the Tiger Sun Bowl against Washington. Bailey’s career has been a rollercoaster ride across multiple programs, but his resilience and adaptability are finally paying off as he takes on this pivotal role.
Bailey, a top-50 recruit out of Georgia in 2020, started his college journey with Tennessee under coach Jeremy Pruitt. Though he displayed flashes of promise during his time in Knoxville, completing 51 of 75 passes for 594 yards, four touchdowns, and two interceptions, he struggled to secure consistent playing time. The depth chart, featuring stars like Hendon Hooker and Joe Milton III, pushed Bailey into a backup role, leading to his decision to transfer midway through the 2021 season.

Seeking a fresh start, Bailey transferred to UNLV. Though opportunities were limited, he made the most of his lone season there, even earning a late-season start and throwing for 318 yards and two touchdowns. In 2023, he joined Louisville as a walk-on, determined to prove his worth. Over the past two seasons, Bailey saw limited action but consistently showcased his accuracy, completing all eight of his pass attempts this season for 63 yards.
The Sun Bowl provides Bailey with a golden opportunity to shine. With Louisville’s starting quarterback Tyler Shough and key players like wide receiver Ja'Corey Brooks opting out to prepare for the NFL Draft, Bailey has stepped up as the team’s leader. Despite the challenges of integrating new players and navigating a season marked by transitions, the Cardinals finished with an 8-4 record, including signature wins against Clemson, Pitt, and Kentucky.
Bailey wasted no time making an impact in the Sun Bowl, delivering a 9-yard touchdown pass in the first quarter and a 21-yard score later in the game. His connection with receivers like Antonio Meeks and Caullin Lacy has been instrumental in keeping Louisville competitive against a strong Washington team.
For Bailey, the Sun Bowl isn’t just a game; it’s a testament to perseverance. His journey through Tennessee, UNLV, and Louisville underscores the importance of determination and seizing every opportunity. Now, under the bright lights of the Sun Bowl, he has a chance to write a memorable chapter in his football career.
