Heavy Rain to Drench Quebec, Up to 50mm Expected as the Year Ends

As we approach the end of 2024, Quebec is bracing for some intense weather conditions. A heavy rainfall event is expected to sweep across several regions of the province, bringing up to 50 millimeters of rain in some areas. The weather system will start impacting Quebec on Sunday afternoon, and it will continue to bring wet conditions through Monday, marking a soggy end to the year.

This new weather system follows a troublesome spell of freezing rain that created hazardous driving conditions earlier this week. As temperatures rise above freezing, the freezing rain will transition into regular rainfall, beginning in the southern regions of Quebec near the Ontario and US borders. The rain will intensify by Sunday evening, with some northern areas of the Outaouais receiving particularly heavy showers. Monday afternoon looks like it will bring the heaviest downpours, especially in the southern parts of the province, although the rain will begin to taper off by evening.

Interestingly, although temperatures in southern Quebec are expected to rise above the freezing point by Sunday morning, preventing freezing rain in these regions, other areas, particularly in the east, will still face the possibility of freezing rain. Between 5 and 10 millimeters of ice accumulation could form in these regions by Monday evening, making roads and surfaces dangerously slippery.

One of the hardest-hit areas will be around the Capitale-Nationale, especially north of Quebec City, where up to 50mm of rain is possible. Across most regions, however, people can expect between 15 and 30mm of rain. This significant rainfall is a result of a weather system that originates from the Gulf of Mexico. Known as the "Gulf Depression," this system draws moisture from the warm waters of the Gulf, leading to the high precipitation levels we are seeing.

This December has already been unusually wet, with many parts of the province exceeding their normal monthly rainfall totals. For example, Quebec City has already recorded 51.8mm of rain compared to the typical 31.7mm for December. As a result, the rainfall from this system will only add to the already significant monthly totals.

Adding to the unusual weather, the temperatures in Quebec will remain unusually warm for this time of year. On December 30th, the region could experience record-breaking warmth, with temperatures potentially reaching 10°C in Montreal and 11°C in Sherbrooke, a far cry from the typical winter chill. It will certainly feel more like a warm spring day, and some might even get the sense they are in a tropical destination. While this may sound like an exaggeration, it does capture the unexpected nature of this winter weather event.

For the next couple of days, residents will have to stay alert for changing road conditions due to the rain and potential ice accumulation. As always, the weather will continue to surprise us as we close out the year in Quebec.
