Heavy Rains Disrupt Events in Tahiti: Multiple Cancellations Due to Bad Weather
In recent days, the weather in Tahiti has taken a turn for the worse, leading to widespread disruptions across the island. As heavy rains continued to pour, several major events scheduled for Saturday, December 14th, 2024, had no choice but to cancel or postpone. Météo France issued an orange and yellow alert for a portion of French Polynesia, urging locals to remain cautious and prepared as the downpours were expected to last throughout the day.
Among the cancellations, the much-anticipated Christmas market organized by the “Papeete Centre-Ville” association was called off. The market, which was supposed to take place at the Papeete Cathedral, had attracted many visitors and exhibitors who were now left disappointed. Similarly, the Gener’action Ma’ohi event, set to run at the Parc Paofai from 2 PM until late into the evening, was also canceled due to safety concerns. Moetai Brotherson, the President of French Polynesia, expressed his regret for the cancellation in a video posted on social media. He mentioned that the decision was made to protect the public and the artists who were excited to perform.

The Heiva Taravana festival, which was supposed to take place at Pirae, was also affected. Originally scheduled for the afternoon, this popular gathering had to be postponed as well, with organizers eyeing the following Saturday for its rescheduled edition. These cancellations are part of a series of responses to the inclement weather that has been impacting the region, with more potentially on the horizon as the storm continues its course.
In his video address, Moetai Brotherson also provided updates on the ongoing response to the weather crisis. He emphasized that all government services were on high alert and working hard to minimize any damage caused by the adverse conditions. In particular, efforts were focused on safeguarding vulnerable areas and ensuring the safety of wildlife, with local authorities helping shelter street birds from the heavy rains.
Brotherson’s message also included a warning to the public. He urged people to exercise extreme caution when traveling, advising them to avoid areas near rivers, which could flood, and to keep children away from water. While no major damage had been reported yet, he reminded everyone that the situation remained fluid and that vigilance was necessary.
The island is experiencing significant rainfall, which has prompted further concerns about flooding and other weather-related challenges. With the alert still in effect, it is clear that the weather will continue to affect daily life in the coming hours. As the islanders brace for more rain, the government remains committed to monitoring the situation and keeping the public informed.
