In-N-Out Closes Oakland Location Amid Alarming Crime Wave
The closure of In-N-Out Burger’s Oakland location earlier this year has sparked significant attention, with the company citing escalating crime as the decisive factor. Lynsi Snyder, heiress and president of the iconic fast-food chain, recently detailed the challenges the location faced, describing the conditions as "absolutely dangerous." This decision marked a historic moment for the company, as it was the first time in its 75-year history that a location was permanently shut down due to safety concerns.
Speaking to PragerU, Snyder revealed the harrowing experiences endured by both employees and customers. Reports of gunfire hitting the store, stabbings, and a range of other violent incidents painted a grim picture of the location's environment. “For the safety of our associates, we just felt like this is not OK,” Snyder explained. Despite the store’s profitability, the persistent threats overshadowed its financial success.

The Oakland restaurant, situated near a bustling business corridor, was plagued by a staggering volume of crime. Data revealed that since 2019, police recorded over 1,300 incidents in the vicinity, including robberies, burglaries, and a shocking 1,174 car break-ins. These alarming statistics, coupled with slow police response times, underscored the challenges businesses face in high-crime areas.
The broader backdrop to this story is Oakland’s struggle with a surge in violent crime, even as other Californian cities like San Francisco have seen decreases. In response to the rising crime rates, Governor Gavin Newsom deployed additional law enforcement officers to the city earlier this year, but the issues persisted.
The closure reflects a growing trend where businesses prioritize the safety of employees and customers over operational presence in crime-affected areas. Snyder emphasized that the decision wasn’t made lightly, but it aligned with In-N-Out's commitment to providing a safe environment. Employees were offered opportunities to transfer to other locations or accept severance packages.
