Is Hollywood Facing Superhero Fatigue? The Case ofKraven the Hunter
The superhero genre, once a sure-fire box office phenomenon, seems to be losing its magic. This reality hit hard with the release of Kraven the Hunter , Sony’s latest Marvel-adjacent venture, starring Aaron Taylor-Johnson. The film’s debut over the December 2024 weekend was anything but heroic, grossing a mere $11 million across 3,211 North American theaters. Falling short of expectations, it secured the third spot behind Disney’s Moana 2 and Wicked . To put this into perspective, even Sony’s February flop Madame Web managed a slightly better $15.3 million in its opening.

Critics and audiences alike delivered a harsh verdict. With a dismal 15% rating on Rotten Tomatoes and a lukewarm CinemaScore of “C,” Kraven the Hunter failed to captivate its viewers. The international box office painted an even bleaker picture, where the film landed in fourth place, overshadowed by releases like the Telugu blockbuster Pushpa: The Rule – Part 2 . Given its $110 million budget, ballooned by last year’s writers’ and actors’ strikes, Kraven faces slim chances of breaking even.
This disappointment isn’t isolated. Sony’s Spider-Man Universe has struggled to establish itself as a consistent player in the superhero genre. Films like Morbius (2022) and Venom: The Last Dance (2024) underperformed, signaling a troubling pattern. While earlier installments such as Venom (2018) thrived, recent entries lack the originality and appeal to draw audiences. Industry experts like David A. Gross attribute this to a lack of compelling narratives and an oversaturated market, where audiences have grown weary of secondary characters and spin-offs.
The broader trend is clear: audiences are demanding more than cookie-cutter superhero films. While major franchises like Deadpool and Wolverine still rake in billions, the failure of Kraven and others highlights a decline in enthusiasm for underdeveloped stories. Hollywood now faces a pivotal moment, needing to rethink how it approaches the genre. If this downward trajectory persists, the superhero genre might soon find itself needing its own savior.
